Water Saving Measures

Message from Scottish Water

You may have seen media coverage in recent days, reflecting that Scottish Water has renewed our call for customers to help us take care of Scotland’s drinking water supplies, after the driest Spring nationwide for 70 years; and a drier than average August in many areas.

Reservoir levels are currently particularly low for the time of year in some areas of the East of Scotland.  The recent spell of warm, dry weather saw daily demand across the country increase by around 100 million litres per day, equivalent to the normal daily supply to Dundee and Tayside.

In response, we’re asking customers – particularly those in the East of the country – to help us maintain supplies for everyone by:

  • Using water efficiently in the garden and outdoor spaces, by using a watering can instead of a garden hose where possible and avoiding using sprinklers;
  • Taking shorter showers;
  • Turning the tap off when brushing teeth;
  • Using washing machines and dishwashers only when fully loaded;
  • Using a bucket and sponge rather than a hose to wash the car; and
  • Checking for and repairing any leaking toilets.

More information on the ways customers can help is available at Water is always worth saving – Scottish Water; and there are also regular updates on Scottish Water’s social media channels.  If you can help to share the message with your community, that is hugely appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Scottish Water
