ActiveTravel Bike Infrastructure

Active Travel is part of Moray Councils initiative to cycling facilities across the region

As such there is the potential to have Bike infrastructure installed in Cullen. After a survey the Active Travel group have come back with two proposals. The Community Council are seeking your views on the options. Please consider the options below and vote on which if any you would prefer.

From Google:A “Sheffield frame bike park” refers to a type of bike rack called a “Sheffield cycle stand” or “Sheffield stand”. These stands are characterized by their U-shaped, steel design, offering a secure and stable way to park bicycles. They are named after the city of Sheffield, where they were first pioneered.

  1. The heritage centre would offer visitors a secure place to park bicycles while visiting local businesses.
From a security point of view, the busy location is a deterrent for theft.

I’m not sure why that would be. Are you using a mobile or desktop. it could be a browser issue.

  2. I would not support the bike port as pictured as it is not appropriate for the street scene in Cullen and in the conservation area. The existing one in Buckie is too big and out of keeping as it would be here. I do support the hoops. It should not be on the pavement by the heritage centre and Tourist Office unless as that pavement has benches and is the main walkway. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters need access. I would think having it by the bus stop/car park and existing bike repair station would be better.

  3. I personally can’t see either proposal doing very much to encourage the use of cycling in the community. Of much more importance in my view, as a cyclists of many years standing, would be the creation of safe cycle ways to the places prople want to go. The shops. Cafes. Doctors etc. The physical separation of vehicles and cyclists would do more to encourage the use of cycling to replace car journeys.

  4. It is difficult to find somewhere to chain your bike to in Cullen square, need to find either a lampost or the railings opposite the heritage centre. Something near the bike maintenance area or any other spot in the square not obstructing other users would be welcome.

  5. This may be best somewhere away from traffic with the current concerns of no parking spaces anywhere, speeding down Seafield Street etc. It may work somewhere like attached to the football pavilion at Logie Park. Many of the routes could also start from there as some paths are in that vicinity.

  6. In the central square near the bike service stand and the shops seems best, if only one option is possible. However, it would be good to also have bike parking up on the viaduct (perhaps on the part of the old railway beyond the turn-off into Cullen, so you don’t have to tackle the hill if you don’t want to), and also some by the entrance to Cullen Library / the Community Centre. In general, I have found Cullen to be very poorly supplied with bike parking, so this is a welcome initiative 🙂

  7. I’m also having trouble viewing the images – I can only see a tiny thumbnail on both my phone and PC browser.

Good idea to locate the stand centrally around the heritage centre or the nearby car park and the repair station. Could a car parking space be converted to a bike space? There’s plenty of parking in Cullen and we need to encourage other modes of transport. I agree with the comment above re the Community Centre/Cullen Library being another good location.

The viaduct location would be unsympathetic to the Cullen conservation area so close to the cottages and our iconic viaduct. The wooden train is well loved and the addition of a bike stand could make the space look a bit cluttered. It’s also at a busy place in the road, near a junction, where it is less safe to cross Seafield St.

Great to hear there will be a new stand.
